Bagheria (Baarìa in Sicilian) is an Italian town of 55,322 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Palermo in Sicily. Bagheria is also known as the City of Villas. After Palermo, it is the most populated municipality in the metropolitan city and the twelfth in Sicily, located on the Tyrrhenian coast of the region at 8 km from the capital.
The toponym Bagheria is said to originate from the Punic bayharia, that is “area descending towards the sea”, or from the Arabic البحرية transcribed baḥriyya, with the meaning of “sea side / marina”. According to other, less plausible hypotheses, it derives from the Arabic bāb al-gerib, ‘door of the wind’.
One of the first mentions of Bagheria dates back to 1134, in the form Bacharìa, and then became Baiarìa in 1573.
